  • Step by step instructions on how to dial open all group 2 mechanical combination safe lock, the easy way. Works on all Group 2 from Sargent & Greenleaf, La Gard, Kaba.

40 years of telling people how to open locks over the phone, I hope it works as well on youtube.

For decades group 2 locks like the S & G and LaGard type were the locks of choice virtually every safe manufacturer in the world, including American Security (Amsec), Cannon, Browning, Fort Knox, Liberty, to name a few.

Hi, my name is John Dean and I'd like to show you an easy way to open up a group two lock whether it's an S&G, Lagard, Kaba, doesn't matter. All the group two locks open up exactly the same way. Now the first thing I want you to do, trick number one is I want you to write down left, right, left, right and then next to that, four, three, two, one, that's the sequence that we are going to be using to dial this safe open, right now.

To follow our sequence first thing you do is, you turn it four times to the left. You sneak up on your first number, in this case it's fifty, and you want to make sure that the crows foot is directly above it, ignore the other mark, this is the one that counts.

Our second number is twenty-four you pass Twenty-four once, going to the right, pass it twice, and we're going to stop at twenty four our third time. Bang there we go. Our last number is sixty-five you pass sixty-five, once, you stop your second time.

    We're almost home.

Now you go to the right, and right about, somewhere, between ninety-five and five, it kind of pulls itself in, and you want to pull it a little further, it'll stop somewhere between eighty-five and ninety-five, now that's retracting
the bolts, at this point this safe is unlocked, and you just open it up.

Now one last note in locking the safe, all group two locks, you must turn them to left four or more times, if you don't do that you're safe is a really locked and it can be easily manipulated opened. Now by the way, if you want these instructions in PDF form, I'm going to put in a link over here on the information thing, on the little more info, so you can go directly and print down a PDF.

Watch the video couple of times you'll get the drift of it, it's pretty easy to do.

    Thank you very much

DeanSafe Thank you for your reply. I looked all over it for the serial number, I could not find it anywhere, I only could see the brand c.m.i. Co the safe is 35yrs old I don't think they still have the code number. It has not been used for a very long time, but thank you if I decide to use it I take your advice and find someone to open it.

      • DeanSafe
        DeanSafe   2 months back

+Emma Agius If You are able to contact the Manufacture with the serial number of your safe they may still have the combination number on file.
If that doesn’t work, you’ll need to find a good safe man in your area.
        Hope this helps,
        John

+Mwaniki Michelle Sorry it didn’t work for you here from things you should check.

#1. Make sure you’re safe has a group to lock.
#2. Make sure you have the right combination.
#3. Your lock may be malfunctioning you should call a safe technician.

Hope this helps, thanks for watching.

Had a safe given to me and was about to use a cutting torch on it. Note, the way you learn it at school, passing the 'previous' number 3 then 2 times to your next number, is NOT the way to do it. Whew! Awesome video, thank you, now I own a safe.

After dialing to the last number and turning to the left I gave it a little extra turn past 85-90 and I was able to open the safe, but now the dial doesn't spin very smoothly...The safe hadn't been open in a long time and I think I over did it. Any suggestions on how to get the dial to spin smoothly again?

I'm not familiar with any five wheel locks, however I'm sure that somewhere, some time, somebody made one. It's more likely that it's a standard 3 or 4 wheel lock that someone added extra numbers to the combo to confuse others, I've done that on my private combo cheat sheets just in case they're found.good luck, sorry I couldn't provide some better info for you. Thanks for watching, John

fred davie Star change their name to American security products and they’re alive and doing well.

Virtually all of their safes use group 2 locks and open up exactly this way. You may have an incorrect combination. If you happen to have around doors safe followed the instructions the same way but at the end when you come up to zero push it in and then continue turning to the right. This is about the only exception I’m familiar with. All else fails give Amsec/American security products your call I’m sure they will help you.
PS their imported fire safes are a bit different.

Try dialing the combo and add a 1/2 a number on each of your numbers (your number is 40 dial 40&1/2 and so on). Then a half a number low (39&1/2) and so on. Then 1 full number higher and so on. We do this first when we go out on a job, some times the combo drifts if its used too much or if it gets bumped, etc. Try this first, the next step is too call a lock tech.Good lock,John

Can you make video on Allied Gary safe with two wheels/locks and one handle? I have combination, but do not know how to open it. Thanks.

+Tess Frgelec So sorry, Allied Gary never made a safe with a two wheel lock. Most likely someone modified the lock or set the combination to two numbers. Any Locksmith should be able to come out and help.
                              Thanks, I hope this helps.

Thank you! Awesome directions. Someone gave me the combo to a really old safe, and the dialing instructions were incorrect. You explained it perfectly - I walked to the safe, dialed it according to your directions -and it opened the first time!

How do I open my safe if I don't have the combination?

First contact the Manufacture and give them the serial number of your safe. With any luck, they will have the combo on file. The other option is to find a local safe technician to drill or manipulate the safe open.Good luck and thanks for watching,John
