Mine doesn't have a key/key hole and it's locked open. The handle is in the down position and the dial won't turn. Any suggestions?

Or watch one of the safe cracking videos and forget the numbers. Terrible safe. I bought one. I'm upgrading to something else.

IF THESE INSTRUCTIONS DID NOT WORK FOR YOU, READ THIS: I have a 3 number dial combination lock Sentry safe, but the correct way to open mine is exactly opposite of the one shown here. For the SFW082DTB you actually first go CLOCKWISE three times past zero, then counterclockwise past the second number once (stopping the second time you come to the second number), then clockwise again until you get to the third number (don't go past the third number). Push the handle down and the safe should open. ALSO, this safe's cylinder does not pop out when you turn the key. There are only two positions: LOCKED is north and unlocked is a quarter turn to the east. You do not have to use the key, though Sentry says it's more secure to use the combo and the key together.

Brady, some "3 number dial combination lock" Sentry safes work the opposite of the instructions shown here, and in my case, the key does not make the cylinder pop out. See my comment above yours for details.

I have a safe in the basement in Troy, Michigan. I opened it and found mold all over it and the papers were black and even the coins . Is there a way to use it in the basement?

Sentry told me that these safes are filled with concrete that attracts and holds moisture (or as they put it, "proprietary insulation that has a high moisture content"), which is why they tell you not to store certain things in the safe: guns, jewelry, computer disks, photos... I know firsthand how wet a Michigan basement gets in winter and really sympathize with you! I pack everything in two heavy-duty, double-strip ziploc bags and toss in some of those silica gel packs that come in shoe boxes and vitamins.

Thanks Steven, I knew the combination but had not used the safe for several years. I'd forgotten the procedure and so couldn't open it. Your explanation and your video enabled me to open my safe on the first attempt. For those who haven't used a dial combination safe before, it's not as easy as it looks. When I first bought the safe I remember having to make several attempts to follow the manufacturers instructions and then practicing for an hour or so before I was confident and competent.

it's funny, it does sound sooo simple you'd think nobody would have any issues. But I never operated a safe before and only used the key on the used safe my parents gave me. But I had the combo so when the dial got moved no big deal right? After lots of cursing, thoughts of something being wrong with it, having to cut it open or spending $ at a locksmith, turns out I was treating it like a padlock and not skipping the 2nd number the first time it came up. I never thought a video of a guy entering a combo would actually help me but it did. Btw for anyone cringing at "used safe" my parents bought the safe new and gave it to me when they upgraded to something bigger.

Obviously, I was doing something wrong. But with your help, FINALLY, the safe is open. I was about to attack it with a crowbar. THX for sharing.

Thank you, it worked for me. The written instructions on Sentry's website are USELESS! They tell you to turn counter clockwise and then say "while turning clockwise...."

if you don't have the combo, this safe can be pried in to pretty easily by pulling the wall away from the latch. You can hammer a crow bar into the seam then gradually separate them. The safe will obviously be ruined afterwards.
