That old lock was really cool. I love old finely made machines and the brass parts look so much better than the plastic

You didn't mention if the older one would also lock up at 9999

Question: where did you get the two solid brass ones and where could I find some?

I get the lock picking part of the channel, but I’m not getting so much of the lawyer part. I was expecting at least some content on the legality of such things

So for the newer locks the driver pins fall into the ratchet but with enough finesse you could technically make those pins lift off the ratchet so they aren’t blocking it correct? But then there’s an extra pin you can’t manipulate with your pick at all making it impossible to reverse the ratchet and keep the counter at the same number which without that extra pin a skilled picker could render the counter useless am I correct or did I miss something?

Some pencils have a rubber on them but it's not as good as the lock you have there

That "counter wheel" feature is a cool concept! Strange that other lock designers don't try to incorporate something like that in their products, esp. those for more industrial usage.

Where do you obtain a lock only sold to the postal service? Seems to me like the only way to get your hands on one would be to steal it.

Very curious which office you burgled in order to obtain this equipment as I severely doubt these items are for sale legally.

I can think of a way to pick it and even reset it. It takes time and blacksmith tools. Basically take it apart then open it then put i back together and use a forge and replace and pen the copper.

So they basically went down in quality with the newer lock?

Correct, still the new one can survive up to 9999 and that what matters for the lock manufacturer i guess

One of the best ways to ship gold is via Registered Mail. Some gold mines ship unrefined gold to refiners that way.

The locks must not be much more than tamper indication, yes.

I would have an identical lock with me. Set it for whatever number is showing on the lock I'm picking and swap them out after I'm done with my caper.
