Great DAC OFF of 2017 Pt. 3: Schiit Bifrost Multibit v. Cambridge DacMagic 100

  • NOTE: Even after recording adjustments, while better, the listening samples I've provide do not come close to revealing the big, much less the subtle differences between these DACs. However, it's better than nothing, and I wanted to give the viewer a chance hear the two DACs being compared. If you listen very very carefully, you will hear differences, just multiply them by somewhere from 10-100 to get an idea of how stark they are in real life. Cheers .... Stereopolice

Very good "at home" comparison ! I have a DACMagic which sounds just fine as it was my first dac. Always wondered what the differences are beyond the more money = better. I guess I will only know if I get a Schiit and compare. Well done, informative...

Comparing a dac that is a $100 cheaper is not a fair comparison. Just my opinion.

This is the Schitt! Hey it's the 2100/Forte guy. I just placed the final piece of the puzzle in the rig. I've been playing through my PC since I started putting this thing together. Tried every possible combo I had or could get cheaply. PC USB, SPDIF optical and coax, Chromecast Audio optical, Android via USB, but the goal was to move the PC and use a streamer/Roon endpoint. Roon plays nice with Chromecast Audio, far better than Google's implementation, even got an Ethernet adapter for it, but even through the noisy PC outs coax seemed to have a more musical sound. I took a chance and got an Allo DigiOne Signature,....dayummm, what a difference! Everything prior to this sounded like computer music, great computer music, but...The Signature just sounds so musical, drums in particular, sound like drums, a lot more punch down low, and just more...right.

Anywho, you know how it goes. Thinking about an R2R DAC and a SET amp(s). The RME is great, really good and the DSP will be hard to beat, but I'm going to start listening too some other DACs, maybe the Schitt Gumby or Yggy, Metrum or something vintage. Looking at SET kits for a cool learnin' project.

Hard to say , songs were not the same... In this video the schiit reminds me the bluesound node 2. Each sound don't last long enough (like no reverb or echo).. The begining and the end of each sound seems to cut almost straight or mudded to make them appear cleaner. This make each sound more distinguishable from each other when they 're in sequence... Some people may like it.. me personally i don't... hence the reason i hate the Bluesound node 2. If you really want to listen to a good DAC, try the Esoteric D-07.. To me when i look a for a budget DAC i want it to sound like The Esoteric DAC..

PS: The Esoteric uses a variation of the same DAC in the TEAC NT-503. I just looked it up.

I agree, Bluesond is terrible - I auditioned a Node 2 also, at home, and w/in a couple of minutes, didn't even want to listen anymore. Something is really really wrong with that thing.

@Joe Al most probably the wrong part there is you , i would bet on it if you ask me , i put my $ on speakers being just fine

@Pavle Pavlovic damn :( they have sound but not full, lacking the bass
Also, I have Wharfdale Opus 2-3, but it sounds like old radio ... someone gave them to me not sure what's wrong with them

          • Pavle Pavlovic
            Pavle Pavlovic  6 months back

@Joe Al there will be no damage if speakers are connected in reverse , if there is dmg , and no sound from speakers they cant be fixed , if there is some sound repair is possible but maybe no sound to do , maybe best way is to replace it .

@Pavle Pavlovic hey pal, since you are familiar with electronics and gizmos ... how can I fix speaker that was plugfed in reverse?

Sure sure best way to get waht you want , is to hear it , but i cant go on to consumerism rampage , and spend a lot of cash to find the DAC that suites me ,i would rather trust it if its tested to be FLAT , in terms of Coloring the sound , or specifically Amplitude VS Frequency analysis , since output is fixed , no need for power measurements . Im interested in that Frequency response , if you have a link of that test , i would like to see that .

Is there a difference in output power between these two dacs?

For 1/3 the price that DM 100 holds its own. Very cool. Definitely getting a Gungnir Multibit though.

I like the Cambridge sounds like a CD or hi-res streaming, the Schiit sounds like a vinyl record which probably sounds good in person but I doubt it

why not just play the music first then explain everything.. just saying it has more impact if you like doing videos. Also avoid talking about unnecessary and or unrelated things.

so you will listen to music on your inferior speaker and headset and expect it to come out like magically different? it's like using a black & white tv and watching someone explain a colour tv and asking them to play the colour video first.

I had the dac magic 100 too and i agree with what you said. The problem with dac magic is the power supply and the very cheap usb cable.Once you change those with decent ones the sound will be a lot more full with soundstage and more warm.

i have the dac magic plus , changed by psu to using torroidal trafo and nichicon kg caps. better than ever. Although not as good as the schiit multibit, i guess thats a bit expected for the price

Amazing description of the Schiit Multibit. Thanks for that. You've convinced me to pull the trigger on the Bifrost Multibit DAC and Jotunheim Head-Amp combo.
